Theism is Rational

First off I want to be a honest as I can with the reader. I am arguing for my belief system hence this is a apologetic letter, but I am not trying to persuade you to believe what I believe. Rather I want to clear the air on a topic which is close to home. This will be a fine tuned (pun intended) and extremely condensed precursor to my first book which I hope to publish in the future. The goal of this letter is to show a perspective on a topic many in my area and culture throw down the drain. I want to show that not only we should think twice but take it seriously. Were not dealing with an irrelevant issue. If what I argue for is true its the most important discussion we must have in this life.

Something I enjoy is going into major cities. Places like New York, Los Angeles, and my “home” major city Boston. Whenever I am in such cities I often look at all the intricate architecture that takes place in a city. The buildings the flashing lights the metro systems etc. It took a large amount of architectural genius’ to put together the planning and blueprints, then it took many more hard working blue collar men to work the long grueling hours in order build such buildings. How about the device I’m currently typing this on? Whether it be my MacBook when I’m at home or it be my pocket sized super computer (IPhone) when I’m out of the house and supposed to be doing something else. I can’t even begin to explain (not smart enough) the level of difficulty and intricacy it takes in order to make these devices. How can I take a 4K photo on a hunk of metal in my pocket? How can I click a glass screen connected to metal and be talking to someone across the world in a matter of seconds? I know we’ve all asked the inevitable question to ourselves “how in the heck does Bluetooth work?”. What if after all of this I went on to say “It all happened by chance”. Really? The buildings magically by chance came together? The nuts and bolts happened to tighten perfectly? There happened to be a too code plumbing system with zero leaks in a 15 story building? What if I showed you a painting by Vincent Van Gogh and told you “I put a blind fold on and threw paint at a board and this masterpiece came up by chance” would you believe me? I’d hope not.

Taking it back to early education science class. We’ve learned this universe is not eternal. Everything at one point came to be. Nothing in this universe is self dependent on existence. Everything is material, everything at one point was nothing. To explain such almost the universal teaching at least in American public schooling is the “Big Bang” caused everything to exist. There’s nothing more or less to creation. At one point billions of years ago there was nothing then all of a sudden there was something. This has caused a wide spread denial of God. This baffles me, firstly because the man who founded the theory was a Catholic priest (Georges Lemaitre), secondly if anything it proves a creator. Why do I say such statement? If the universe was eternal there’s no need for a exterior force to create it, it’s eternal. Since the universe is not eternal therefore it needs an external force to create it.

I know, it may seem like I had made a huge jump, and if I ended the article there it wouldn’t be a sufficient argument; but let’s take it back to the beginning of this letter. The intricacy of major cities, smart phones etc. It would be insane for me to say those things came from nothing, they just happened to become that way? No there was an intelligent force behind these creations. Those are just a grain of sand in an grand universe. If there is no higher power to control the way the universe pans out, anything could’ve happened. Imagine the universe has a set of dials. If certain dials were turned far enough one way, you don’t get stable atoms, stars, or complex chemistry; turn others far enough the other way, and you don’t get galaxies. Yet the observed values fall within ranges compatible with complex structures and life. If there is no God there is no force to perfectly set such dials in align to where life can exist, let alone the conscious and intelligent life that we humans are. If there is no God to set the dials they would be spinning with no desired outcome.

Once again my goal of this was not to instantly convert every reader. All I’m trying to do is change how you think about how logical God is, and how theism maybe isn’t on similar belief system of the tooth fairy or Santa. Maybe after all, theism is rational.
